This hat is a fast knitting project!
I wanted to make a hat with a big texture, and I chose a super bulky yarn for it: Andes (drops) – I already had it at home. Choose another super bulky yarn if you like (10st=10 cm in stockinett stiches)! I had a waffle pattern in mind, which looks to have layers and will be warm for the winter season. It’s easy to knit too when you have the waffle-pattern printed in your mind! You are not so dependent on the measuring gauge. If it’ll be a little too narrow, you can always add a cuff at the bottom, no panic!
The idea is to knit a rectangular piece of 21 cm wide and 40 cm long – or as far as you want around your head. Check around your own head, to get the best fit. It’s good if it’s a little tight so that the yarn can stretch and the hat will fit perfectly after a while.
Waffle pattern (divisible by 3st + 2):
Row 2: K 3, * slip 1 (= yo), K2, repeat fr *, slip 1, K1.
Row 3: K1, * K2 tog (= yo and next st), yo, slip 1, repeat from *, K1
Row 4: K2, * slip 1 (= yo), K2, repeat from *
Repeat v. 1-4. Note that after the first row, knit yo and the next tog on row 1 and 4.
Cast on 32 stitches with knitting needles No. 8mm, knit waffle pattern for 40 cm. Remember to leave a long piece of yarn to sew the edge togehter.
Cast off from the purl side/WS, follow the pattern to knit together a yo with the next m. In the next st. K2 in the same st instead, while casting off. PM in last st.
Sew the short ends with yarn (from the cast on), from WS.
Change to stitching needles No. 7mm. Pick up 53 sts from WS around the top, including the st on the marker. Work in the round like this:
Row 1: K
Row3: * k3tog, K1 * K3
Row4: * K1, k3tog * K2
= 8 sts. Pull the yarn through.
Try the hat! Is it too short for you? Pick up 56 sts along the bottom edge of the if the cap is 40 cm in circumference. Knit an optional cuff, like * K1, p1*.
Do you have another idea? Do try it! This pattern is a good basic pattern. Please tell me how it went / link to your post. This is the first time I translate one of my patterns into english – is there something wrong please let me know!
